1. Bumpers (Fenders)
Bumpers protect your boat from damage caused by docks and other boats. While you're docked, boats naturally rock with the waves and can hit the dock or another boat. Having the right size bumpers for your boat and water conditions can prevent costly scratches and dents.
Even when you're out visiting another marina or tying up beside another boat, always have your bumpers ready. It's one of the easiest ways to protect your boat.
2. Fire Extinguisher
This one should go without saying. Accidents happen, and a fire extinguisher is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can have on board, no matter the size of your boat.
We've actually had to use ours twice after grill fires while we were docked. Those experiences taught me that you never think you'll need a fire extinguisher...until you do. Safety should always come first.
3. Boat Wash & Wax
Let's be honest...most boat owners treat their boats like family. We want them looking their best!
My husband handles washing the boat, but I'm the one obsessed with clean windows. 😂 I truly believe that when the windows sparkle, the whole boat looks cleaner. I'm constantly wiping down the windows on our houseboat because I love keeping our happy place looking its best.
Regular washing and waxing not only keeps your boat looking beautiful, but it also helps protect the finish from sun, dirt, and water stains.
4. Boat Cover
If your boat isn't stored under cover, a good boat cover is worth every penny.
It protects your boat from the sun, rain, leaves, bird droppings, and other debris. It also helps reduce mold and mildew while keeping critters from making themselves at home.
This past winter we made the mistake of not covering our pontoon before putting it into dry storage. Big mistake! Cleaning it took twice as long. There was much more mold on the seats than usual, and it even looked like moss was growing on the floor.
Needless to say...we learned our lesson!
5. Dock Lines
Strong dock lines are essential. They're what keep your boat safely secured, so it's important to inspect them regularly for wear and tear.
A few years ago, temperatures dropped to around 2 degrees. One of the houseboats on our dock had its lines break, and the boat drifted nearly 200 yards before getting stuck on an island. It took about three weeks to get it removed.
That experience was a reminder that dock lines don't last forever. Before storms or extreme cold, take a few minutes to check your lines. It could save you a lot of headaches—and protect your happy place.
Boat life is exciting, relaxing, and full of unforgettable memories. But it's also our responsibility to take care of the vessel that gives us those moments. These are my Top 5 things every boat owner should have to help protect their investment.
I'm sure there are plenty of others, but these are the ones that have made the biggest difference for us.
