Boat Neighbors

We have been boaters now for about 8 years at the present moment. In that time, we have met some really nice people whose paths we may have never crossed had it not been for our love of boating.

If you have your boat docked, it allows you to get to know the people on your dock and in many cases you develop great friendships.

We have been on 3 different docks; 2 different marinas. Needless to say, we have met quite a lot of people, some nice some not so nice. I won’t go into the story of the not so nice neighbors; I will just say… God bless them!!

If you are a boater or thinking of becoming a boater, here are some tips to ensure you are a great boat neighbor!

1. Greet and Build Relationships

• Introduce yourself to fellow boaters on your dock.

• Be approachable and open to conversation, sharing your love for boating.

• Celebrate diversity and respect differences, creating an inclusive environment.

 2. Be Respectful of Shared Spaces

• Keep your dock area clean and organized.

• Avoid leaving gear or personal items that might obstruct walkways or common areas.

• If your dog/and or pet poop on the dock or walkway, clean it us. Also it’s good and in most marina contracts that pets should be on a leash. Keep in mind that everyone DOES NOT like pets of any kind. Be respectful of your neighbors

3. Practice Boating Etiquette

• Respect quiet hours and avoid loud music or noise late at night.

• Be mindful of your wake and docking practices to avoid disturbing others.

 4. Be Helpful and Supportive

• Offer assistance to neighbors when they’re docking or handling heavy gear.

• Share tips about local waterways or events, particularly if you’re more experienced.

• Be generous with advice or tools when someone is in need.

 5. Stay Involved and Build Community

• Participate in marina events or social gatherings.

• Organize or suggest inclusive activities like potlucks or group excursions.

 6. Celebrate Your Presence and Contribution

• Be proud of your space in the boating community and let your passion shine.

• Decorate your boat or dock area to reflect your unique style or heritage, sparking curiosity and conversation.

 7. Be Safety-Conscious

• Share safety tips and ensure your boat is equipped with proper gear.

• Be mindful of kids, pets, or anyone needing extra care around the dock.

 8. Respect the Environment

• Practice eco-friendly habits like properly disposing of trash and avoiding fuel spills.

• Share your love for the water by promoting sustainability.

By being friendly, respectful, and authentic, you’ll create lasting connections and a welcoming dockside community.
