Winter is Here!
Winter is here! Because we are in the south, we can still enjoy the lake well into the winter months. However, there are times where our temps can dip below freezing. This is the time when we have to take preventative measures to protect our boat. Here is a list of things we do to make sure our boat is safe during these times.
Ensure the ropes are in good condition...Due to the possibility of winds during this cold spell, if the ropes are not in good condition, the temperatures could cause them to break. A couple of years ago, the temperature dropped close to 2 degrees, and a boat on the dock broke loose drifted on the lake. Such incidents can happen.
Remove water from all the lines..It’s important to remove water from your boat’s plumbing lines when temperatures drop below freezing to prevent damage. Water expands as it freezes, which can cause pipes, hoses, and fittings to crack or burst. This can lead to costly repairs and potential leaks when you use the boat again. I have experienced this for myself. You will definitely have to call a plumber.
Protect the batteries...A fully charged battery is less likely to freeze because the electrolyte solution in a charged battery has a lower freezing point. Keep the charge level at 100% to prevent damage from freezing. Disconnect the battery terminals if you won’t be using the houseboat for an extended period. This prevents any slow discharge. If possible, remove the battery from the boat and store it in a temperature-controlled environment. Ideally, keep it above freezing. If the battery remains on the boat, connect it to a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep it charged without overcharging. If removing the battery isn’t feasible, use an insulated battery box or wrap it in a thermal blanket to reduce exposure to cold.
Plants/Small furniture/Outside Decor…Any plants you may have on your boat will probably not survive if temps drop below freezing. for this reason. it’s best to take them home after boating season to protect them. Any small furniture or decor you may have outside the boat, you should bring in. If you don’t have enough room inside your boat to bring in the furniture, then it would be wise to tie it down.
Make sure your dock box is secured and locked.
Make sure any floating mats or canoes you have are secured.
Taking these steps will help ensure your boat stays in great condition and avoids costly repairs when spring arrives!
Winter weather 2022 at Lake Lanier Island. This boat ropes were not secured; the heavy winds and cold temps caused the ropes to come undone, and the boat drifted to a nearby island. The temp was around 2 degrees. Yikes!!
